Adding Clay

Lumpy dry clay on early bird sculpture

This was the first sculpture in which I used Smooth-on’s Free Form Air Epoxy Clay, and while I found the result to be strong and light, I did struggle to get the blending and smoothness I desired. I used alcohol with gloved fingers and tools, but it was difficult to get the clay to blend and join together. My hope is sanding will bring the piece to the smooth form that I desire.

Applying the smooth form air over the paper armature did work well, and the piece is very light due to the form being hollow. I applied the clay building up to a 3-5mm thickness.

I do plan on using Free Form Air again, as I think a little practice will help get better results in the future—a good option for medium-sized sculptures.
