January 2025

I kicked off the year by driving an RV across the country—definitely not something I’d recommend in January, but it was a real adventure, and we made it through. Along the way, memories were made, and I couldn’t help but be in awe of the shifting landscapes. As I cruised down I-40, the scenery transformed from mountains to desert, then to prairie, and eventually the Ozarks emerged. It was such a striking change, and it got me thinking about the terrain in the world of my creatures. What do the rocks and plants look like where the Uggles live?

Back in the studio, I channeled some of that inspiration into new wall-hanging sculptures. I started with cardboard armatures and experimented with different ways to: add hanging hardware, form the eye cups, and try out Joni’s Ultimate Paper Mâché recipe. This paper clay goes on beautifully and dries rock-hard. I ended up applying two thin coats, and placing the pieces in front of the fire sped up the drying process.

Once they were dry, I sanded them down, applied joint compound, and sanded again. Sanding joint compound is oddly satisfying. Just make sure to wear a mask—it’s easy to get lost in the dust, but it’s all worth it for the smooth finish.
